Film: La Jetée

Tonight, I went to a screening of La Jetée, an experimental “photo roman”, made in 1962. It’s a weirdly compelling and strangely disturbing piece of cinema almost entirely made up of grungy, high-contrast still images. I’ve seen it described as science-fiction, which is understandable given that it has time travel as a central theme, but I think I’d file it under ‘horror’.

One bit of trivia: sources say that the individual images of the film were made with a Pentax Spotmatic. But my friend pointed out that the Spotmatic came out in 1964, two years after the film’s release.

It turns out that the film is available to watch on YouTube. Or here, if you’d rather.
